CLOUD COMPASS
LAIRD LANIER
Cloud Compass is a compass dial with an iconographic center surrounding cloud elements and a flock of birds radiating from its center. This sculpture is suspended from the Medical Arts lobby ceiling at Atrium Health Cabarrus’ main entrance. Completed in 2017-2018, this sculpture is made of textured brass, wood and acrylic elements with aluminum backing and LED lighting in the clouds. It measures 23 feet long by 20 feet 4 inches wide by 3 feet high.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Laird Lanier wanted to bring the sky into the room and the compass also grounds people with reference to where they are geographically. As a former technical designer with a broad understanding of material properties and manufacturing methods, Lanier now combines the tools of his engineering background with his creativity building kinetic and suspended sculptures.
