Phyllis Wingate Portrait

BILL GRADY

This 30 x 24 oil on canvas portrait of Phyllis Wingate is hanging in the hallway entrance leading to the Heart Tower lobby in Atrium Health Cabarrus. Phyllis was instrumental in starting the hospital’s healing art program. The portrait honors her legacy and dedication to creating a calming and uplifting environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Phyllis believes in the power of art to heal and reduce stress, and her work and vision leave a lasting impact. It was a meaningful project for me to work on, knowing the lasting influence she had on the hospital and community and I was grateful that it gave me the opportunity to meet her.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bill Grady has loved art for as long as he can remember. As a kid, he would spend time in church sketching quick portraits and caricatures of the people around him on whatever paper he could find. At home, he would get lost in the pages of their Norman Rockwell books or Mad Magazine. Bill’s family was always supportive, encouraging him to “keep drawing.” Over the years, he has grown as an artist, taking on commissioned portraits, illustrations, and graphic design. These days, Grady is especially drawn to painting nature and animals, which reflect his love for the natural world.

Bill is inspired by the beauty of everyday things people often take for granted, and he aims to capture both light and meaning in his art. Art celebrates life by showing both the highs and lows, the joy and sorrow. Influenced by the culture of the South and by nature from around the world, Bill hopes his art brings a genuine reflection of his experiences. In other words: “I tend to draw a lot of faces.”

Grady’s style blends realism with the absurd, and can go from tight to loose, meaningful to whimsical depending on the situation. While he strives to stay flexible and let each piece guide its own direction, a person’s unique approach naturally shines through. Over time, Bill has explored various techniques and mediums but mostly works in oil on canvas. He says, “I’m still learning, testing, making mistakes and hopefully improving a little each day.”

Bill reflects that he was once commissioned for a piece that he put a lot of effort into, expecting it to be a key moment in his career. But just before presenting it, the client backed out without ever seeing the work. Bill lost both the payment and the recognition it could have brought. Rather than dwell on the setback, he gave the piece to someone who would appreciate it, and “the experience motivated me to ensure future projects were even better, proving to myself that challenges wouldn’t hold me back.”
